Inadequate nutrition leaves children vulnerable to disease and early death and greatly increases the risk of maternal mortality. It can permanently diminish individual potential, cripple communities and damage a country’s ability to compete in the global marketplace. Yet hunger and malnutrition are solvable problems. That is why Auburn’s War on Hunger is waged on the local, national and international fronts – from educating, motivating and activating students through Universities Fighting World Hunger activities on hundreds of campuses to the partnership-building and information-sharing activities of the Hunger Solutions Institute. This grassroots and educational outreach effort was launched in 1994 in partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and has spread to nearly 300 campuses around the world. The Institute was established by the College of Human Sciences and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn University in February 2012 in an effort to further Auburn’s nationally recognized efforts around food security domestically and globally.
